[ About ]

We build websites that are quick and clear, for businesses that would rather be understood than admired.

A small studio in Nairobi. We take a few projects at a time so each one gets proper attention, and we stick around after launch, which is normally when a site starts to be worth something.

Worked with

Non-profits, clinics, salons, energy companies. Different rooms, much the same problem. Each one needed to explain itself clearly and load fast doing it.

    How it started

ScratchDesign started out of irritation. Small businesses were paying real money for sites that looked fine in a screenshot and fell apart in use. Six seconds to load on a phone. Copy nobody had thought about. Nothing you could change without going back to whoever built it.

The name is the argument. Built from scratch, not assembled out of a template and a dozen plugins. Fewer moving parts, a page that holds up on an ordinary phone, and code the next developer can actually read.

It started with one project for a friend's business, then another by referral, and it has mostly gone that way since. Still small on purpose. Enough work to stay sharp, few enough projects that nothing gets handed to somebody who was not in the first conversation.

    How we work

    1. Performance is not a phase

What you put on the page decides how fast it is, so we settle that while the design is being made. Auditing it afterwards is the expensive version.

    2. You own what we build

Clean code, no lock-in. If you take the project somewhere else tomorrow, whoever picks it up can read it.

    3. One conversation, start to finish

The person you brief is the person who builds it. Nothing gets lost on the way through an account manager.

    4. Honest about what a site can do

A website will not fix an offer nobody understands. We would rather say that early than take the brief and hope.
